What are Dietary supplements?
Dietary supplements are the essential nutrients that are much required for better growth of the body. As most of the nutrients are available in our diet but some are not. To complete that remaining one, we require extra supplements i.e. Dietary supplements. They help in lowering the risk of health issues like osteoporosis, arthritis, and cardiovascular events. These supplements come in the form of pills, capsules, gels, powder, or extracts. They contain vitamins, minerals, amino acids, herbs, and enzymes.
According to the Dietary Supplements Health and Education Act of 1994. A dietary supplement is a product i.e. intended to supplement the diet, contain one or more dietary ingredients or their constituents, intended to be taken by mouth as a pill or capsule or liquid and labeled as a dietary supplement.
Well, there are mainly 3 types of dietary supplements. Let’s see them one by one.
Vitamins & Minerals
Vitamins & minerals are the two major nutrients that play a vital role in the growth of the body. There are a total of 13 types of vitamins i.e. Vitamin A, C, D, E, K, and B vitamins (thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid, biotin, B6, B12, and folate). Vitamins have different jobs in our bodies. From Building immunity against infectious disease to keeping nerves healthy, they play an important role. Some minerals like calcium, potassium are required in higher amounts. However, you can get most of them in your diet.
If you often get sick, your immunity doesn’t increase or you feel a body ache every time you move then speciality supplements are for you. These are the magical nutrients that help you all above tasks. There are several speciality supplements like omega-3, ashwagandha, turmeric, elderberry, etc. According to a survey by the Council of Responsible Nutrition(CRN), approximately 43 per cent people uses speciality supplements in their diet. These supplements have various health benefits like, they regulate the blood pressure easily, etc.
Botanicals are plant-based supplements that can be used for the proper growth of the body in natural ways. According to a survey around 26 percent of people uses herbals & botanicals as a dietary supplement. Green tea, garlic, cranberry, echinacea, and ginseng are some of the most commonly used dietary supplements in the botanicals category.
Dietary supplements have various health benefits. They lower the risk of health issues like osteoporosis, arthritis, hypertension, and spina bifida (birth defect). They boost the metabolism of the body and keep you away from various communicable diseases.
- VITAMIN A: Helps to maintain skin, bones, and soft tissues healthy.
- C: It is an antioxidant that promotes healthy teeth & gums, also essential for wound healing.
- D: It is made by the body by sunlight, 10 to 15 minutes of sunshine thrice a week is enough to produce the body’s requirement of vitamin D.
- E: Also an antioxidant, used to make RBC’s and use vitamin K.
- K: Used to coagulate the blood.
- B6: It plays important role in proteins. The more proteins you eat the more vitamin B6 your body requires.
- B12: It helps to form RBC’s & maintain the central nervous system.
- THIAMINE: It helps to change carbs into energy. It is also essential for heart function and healthy nerve cells.
- RIBOFLAVIN: Important for proper growth of the body and production of RBC’s.
- NIACIN: Maintain healthy skin & nerves.
- BIOTIN: Essential for the metabolism of proteins & carbs. Helps in the production of hormones & cholesterol.
- CALCIUM: It works with vitamin D and helps to increase bone strength.
- POTASSIUM: It helps to regulate fluid balance, muscle contraction, and nerve signals.
- OMEGA-3: It reduces the risk of cardiac death caused by abnormal heart rhythm and regulates blood pressure.
- ASHWAGANDHA: It can reduce blood sugar levels and cortisol levels.

When taken in a dose as prescribed by the physician. Till then there will be no side effects. however, if you took it more than the prescribed dose it may show the following signs:

- Kidney problems

People suffering from any kind of kidney disease should not take these supplements unless a doctor prescribes them to do that. Supplements are not regulated by the Food & Drugs Administration (FDA), and such products may be harmful to people, especially people suffering from kidney problems.
